It Takes a Community to Change Our Schools

Enrichment

These projects in- and outside the classroom provide rich educational opportunities and help make learning fun and bring subject like History and social studies alive.  We provide support for field trips and projects like Womens History in New Mexico/Santa Fe and Model Legislature.

We are requesting a total of $1500.00 for an educational field trip for our students. Our field trip will be to Explora, and will benefit 4 classrooms, that include two kindergartens, and two fifth grades(100 kids). The cost will cover admission for each student and the busses to get to Albuquerque. We know as educators this is beneficial because it is a site where it is interactive learning. The children will be able to explore different activities, with their different senses. Some of our students have never been outside Santa Fe, and some have not gone out of their neighborhoods. We know that children learn different professions, ideas and opportunities when they travel outside their own neighborhoods. A field trip can awaken the desire in a child to try new things and pursue previously unconsidered dreams. We are hoping to go in May. We feel that working together with the 5th graders will give our fifth graders a chance to leaders and ro le models for our kindergarten students. Our kindergarten students will be able to actively explore with their 5th grade buddy. We feel this opportunity will help our children to see that we are a school community that cares for one another.

Games are a great way to both learn and review vocabulary and grammar, and to make learning fun! This project would fund five games for my classroom, that will help students apply the topics we have been learning.  Many of these will be useful in class during review days, the dice and buzzer sets I can use often to help students learn many different concepts in a fun and entertaining way, and the others will also be great during lunch and after school as students often hang out in my room and they can use the time to have fun practicing German.

We have been growing our AP program for many years, encouraging students to challenge themselves academically and completing their course of study by taking the AP exam in their subjects. Historically, the exam fee was generously subsidized by the state and district for our free and reduced lunch status students. This year (and we fear subsequent years) was less generously funded and even the reduced fee of $28.00 will be too much for our students, many of whom take multiple exams. We are looking for funding to defray some of this cost. We will need the money by the first week of May, 2013.

The AVID program's mission to close the achievement gap is being pursued at Capital High School. We spend a great deal of time in collaboration, and would benefit from being able to use our floor for group activities. A room-sized rug would make this a much more comfortable place to have class!

Students in both AP English classes and English Language Development at Monte del Sol Charter school will team up with Jimmy Santiago Baca in a writing workshops. The workshop will be the culmination of a unit focused heavily on excerpts of Jimmy Santiago Baca's works, (old and new, poetry and prose) with a particular focus on follow-up writing exercises for students to connect with literature.

We would like to have our 6th graders share in  Experiential Education, An Exploration of Earth's Origins. Lessons will be rich and aligned to curriculum.  We will travel on the RailRunner to Albquerque and spend the day at the Museum of Natural History in Albuquerque. We are asking for a total of $1000 to help fund this wonderful experiential education experience. We will fundraise in order to raise the rest of the monies needed.

The Third Grade team teachers want to make a special after-school club available for third graders. They are working with Assistance Dogs of the West trainers. The trainers teach students to train assistance dogs for people with disabilities. Students will also receive lessons in leadership, disabilities awareness, responsibility and community service. In these classes, students have the chance to learn very important and useful leadership skills while working with the dogs.
Much needed assistance dogs are placed with people with disabilities in our community, providing them the means to live more fulfilled and independent lives. Assistance Dogs of the West provides instructors trained to bring these programs to schools. They have a proven track record of working successfully with students.

I am the Enrichment teacher at Acequia Madre Elementary and my students have the wonderful opportunity to study robotics with a scientist from Los Alamos Labs. During this project, groups of 5-6 students will work in teams to solve real-life problems. Each group will design, build, and program a robot for a specific purpose. After designing, building, and programming, we will analyze the success of each robot in solving the problem presented.
We are requesting 2 kits at a total cost of $558.00. This project will encourage teamwork, problem solving, computer skills, and familiarity with robotics. Please help this opportunity happen for my students and for students in years to come.

Instead of the 12 - 15 students we normally have in a club, we have already received more than 50 permission forms for students who are interested in joining the Lego Club! We are very excited to have such a popular club available to our students, but we are worried about making sure we have the resources we will need to make the club enjoyable for them. First, I knew there was no way we would want to have 50+ children in one room building and creating with Legos. So I enlisted more staff members and parents so that we can split the children into 3 different rooms and have plenty of adult supervision to keep things safe and under control. The only thing we lack now is more Legos to spread out between the rooms so that our kids will have enough Legos to build with and create. Please help us buy more Legos and make this club a real success!

Our Chess club lost many members due to graduation last year and we need to draw more young students into the group and begin teaching them the game. A large set offers a different perspective and is very enticing to young players. We found a set online for 99.00 plus shipping and handling and we have a great storage space in our afterschool program's storage room. We meet weekly and parents sometimes join in. The club is open to casual aftercare players as well. We think a giant set maybe just the trick to get new players.

Real life experience for 10 students in becoming legislators, committee debaters, judges, attorneys and journalists in the YMCA sponsored Model Legislature. For 3 years, about 5 students have participated in the Model Legislature. This experience is unparalleled in that students themselves organize, debate, argue and compromise about real bills in the NM Legislature. Ten Capital High School students will work with students from all over the state participate (Manzano High School and Sandia ABQ; Socorro High School etc) In the Spring, we hope to have about 10 students. They go to the Roundhouse every day and assume their roles.

The 3rd grade team at Pinon Elementary has participated in National Dance Institute (NDI) for the past two years. The program has been beneficial to 75 + third grade students who are the ages of 8 and 9. They come from a diverse background. We have eleven special education students and thirty-five English Language Learners. NDI reinforces to our students the importance of following multi-step directions, commitment, self-discipline, perseverance, nutrition, exercise, confidence, all while integrating out Common Core State Standards. They emphasize excellence by teaching students to do their best, work hard, never give up, and finding a healthy mind through exercise.
Previously our participation in NDI has been funded by our Parents Education Services (PES Club), but this year we are facing budgetary constraints, and there is not enough money to support our 14 week program.

For the past 10 years, I have been taking my students to the Santa Fe Care Nursing Home to Christmas Carol. Last year, we added Kingston Community to our stops. The students sew pillows for the residents and also learn 20 plus standard songs from the era of most of the residents. It always proves to be the most moving and memorable event not only for the students, but also for the many parents who accompany us. I truly feel it is important for the students to do community service in any way possible and this is something they have all thoroughly enjoyed all the while reaching out to others in very difficult circumstances. As a reward and their "present", I treat them to lunch at Furr's Cafeteria so we can have a celebration for ourselves as well. Last year was the first year I had to pay for the bus myself. It was over $200. I am requesting support for $200 in order to pay for the bus once again this year.

I would do it again and again even if the funding weren't available because it's that important to the students' wellness and connection to the community at large. It is also one of the most important moments in my school year as well.

Pinon Elementary School will afford our parents and families the opportunity to attend ESL ( English as a Second Language ) classes while their children participate in tutoring classes. In our efforts to empower parents to become actively engaged in their children's education at Pinon School, Saturday morning ESL adult classes will be conducted. These classes will be taught by Pinon faculty members to develop community and to support adults and their families. These classes will serve as an oppoportunity to engage and guide parents in their efforts to participate in their children's education, as well as to provide the support, knowledge and skills necessary for parental success at home, in the community and in the work force.

Certified Pinon ELL teachers will offer tutoring for the children and students in the area of reading, language arts and math while parents attend the ESL classes. This is a family academic endeavor that models for the students the importance of education as exemplified by the parents' participation. Saturday mornings will be a family event at Pinon School.

Classes and tutoring sessions will be 2 hours on Saturday mornings for a seven week term. It is our goal to conduct three, seven week sessions of classes.  Overall the hope is to fund this entire program for $5000.  We can begin this amazing program with $1500.

Tesuque Elementary School began a Lego Club last year. Parent Volunteers run the club, and they would like to expand the program this year. They will be including math in the program along with more technical building and robotics building using legos. The students will be needing to use laptops for this, and the school would need 4 laptops at the price of $250.00 each. The software package for the program specific for the Lego Club is $100.00 (this price includes shipping and handling).

Total Request $1100.00 for 4 laptop computers and software package.

Students at Santa Fe High School are offered two levels of Dance Elective courses and in each level study many forms of dance from Tribal African Dance to Hip Hop to Tap Dance. In order to fully experience and learn about tap, appropriate tap shoes are necessary to hear and feel the rhythms that are unique to this style.

This project funding request is to further the progress of the Capital Green Project (Outdoor Classroom, greenhouse and community garden team).  We want to continue maintaining a functional greenhouse and community garden in the El Sol courtyard at Capital High.

I would like to encourage science teachers to get involved in the greenhouse, for it is an instructional tool with incredible potential, and all the teachers to get involved in growing delicious fresh produce, and generating interest in gardening and growing good food in all the students of Capital High, with emphasis on sustainabilty and oragnicly produced food.

We would like to have the First in Math online Math Program funded. The self-paced, interactive program provides "deep practice" for students in the areas of computation, multi-step problem solving, and test practice.  First in Math is first and foremost about the mathematics. The students receive immediate feedback and are motivated to practice skills until mastery so they can move on to more challenges.

This request is  to promote and deepen learning by developing and cultivating one’s knowledge-based interest in social studies.
In the 4th grade, having frequent and liberal access to a world globe is a necessary learning enrichment experience. However, it is difficult to receive adequate funding for more than one globe in the classroom (I currently have no world globes).

A school garden provides a sanctuary for children and families.  In today’s world,  it is a much needed gathering place for young and old.  In the natural beauty of the garden, a community is nurtured through working and creating together, growing food, getting exercise and eating well while being connected with nature, themselves and each other.
