Science & Math

The solutions to challenges that face modern civilizations and ancient ones will require scientists. Science is perhaps the most important field of study because it covers everything from microbes to whales, from rocks to galaxies and for young creative minds, math and science rock!

For over eight years, the I Can Do Math (ICDM) program at Capshaw Middle School has increased student's math skills by an average of over 3 grade levels per year. The key is a fully individualized approach. Each student works through a sequence of math concepts at their own rate, they are never left behind, despairing of success. The Summer Program is a 4 week, 30 hour intensive version of ICDM; over the program’s 8-year history, the average student has gained 2.1 grade levels. We have a grant for 10 boys and a matching grant for 10 girls. We need your help. We have 10 girls that need $750 each.  Each $375 you provide toward one girl's scholarship will be met with a matching grant from a generous donor. Help us show our 4th through 8th graders that they can do math.

We have been growing our AP program for many years, encouraging students to challenge themselves academically and completing their course of study by taking the AP exam in their subjects. Historically, the exam fee was generously subsidized by the state and district for our free and reduced lunch status students. This year (and we fear subsequent years) was less generously funded and even the reduced fee of $28.00 will be too much for our students, many of whom take multiple exams. We are looking for funding to defray some of this cost. We will need the money by the first week of May, 2013.

We need help paying for the bus to take us to our Comet Mission at the Challenger Learning Center in Albuquerque. This is an incredible learning experience during which students research, apply for, and enact different roles on a simulated shuttle mission to study comets. They will act as scientists, performing a variety of tasks and experiments. Please help us get to mission control!

Earlier this year my students studied spiders and were so fascinated by what they learned, that they wanted to explore other crawly creatures! This unit of study will have all the kindergarten classes exploring ants, ladybugs, and butterflies! They will be able to observe live insects in the classroom.

In order for my students to work in smaller groups per unit, I am asking for 2 more units and 2 software programs which are necessary to program the robots.

My project's goal is to teach my students how to use a USB flash drive to store documents they've created, and to continually add to those documents while becoming confidant and savvy technology users. I need $170 ($7 x 24).

We would like to have our 6th graders share in  Experiential Education, An Exploration of Earth's Origins. Lessons will be rich and aligned to curriculum.  We will travel on the RailRunner to Albquerque and spend the day at the Museum of Natural History in Albuquerque. We are asking for a total of $1000 to help fund this wonderful experiential education experience. We will fundraise in order to raise the rest of the monies needed.

Middle School students learn better when they are engaged in hands on science activities. This grant proposal would provide materials for studying the development of organisms. Each of approximately 100 Middle School students at Gonzales Community School will grow Wisconsin Fast plants from seeds over a period of 30 days. Amazingly, they will be able to harvest new seeds only about 45 days later from the plants they grew and then plant the next generation. In addition, students will analyze the development of animal species including the cabbage white butterfly and prepare microscope slides of plant and animal cells.

I am the Enrichment teacher at Acequia Madre Elementary and my students have the wonderful opportunity to study robotics with a scientist from Los Alamos Labs. During this project, groups of 5-6 students will work in teams to solve real-life problems. Each group will design, build, and program a robot for a specific purpose. After designing, building, and programming, we will analyze the success of each robot in solving the problem presented.
We are requesting 2 kits at a total cost of $558.00. This project will encourage teamwork, problem solving, computer skills, and familiarity with robotics. Please help this opportunity happen for my students and for students in years to come.

This grant would fund two field trips for Santa Fe High School students to observe the upper Santa Fe watershed reservoirs (where people are typically not allowed to go).

They will see where our water comes from, conduct macro-invertibrate tests and learn about the plants in the area. The funds will pay for school buses and help to fund the organization River Source's staff to lead the field trips (they will plan the lessons, and bring in equipment such as waders, microscopes and water testing kits for the students to use) and also visit our classrooms before the field trip to prepare the students for what they will be learning about in the field.

Tesuque Elementary School began a Lego Club last year. Parent Volunteers run the club, and they would like to expand the program this year. They will be including math in the program along with more technical building and robotics building using legos. The students will be needing to use laptops for this, and the school would need 4 laptops at the price of $250.00 each. The software package for the program specific for the Lego Club is $100.00 (this price includes shipping and handling).

Total Request $1100.00 for 4 laptop computers and software package.

I am requesting $199 to purchase a classroom subscription to IXL on-line math practice site for a year. IXL is a great program that allows students to practice math skills at their own pace. It aligns to New Mexico state standards, as well as Common Core standards. . Please consider helping our 4th grade class excel in math this year!

This project funding request is to further the progress of the Capital Green Project (Outdoor Classroom, greenhouse and community garden team).  We want to continue maintaining a functional greenhouse and community garden in the El Sol courtyard at Capital High.

I would like to encourage science teachers to get involved in the greenhouse, for it is an instructional tool with incredible potential, and all the teachers to get involved in growing delicious fresh produce, and generating interest in gardening and growing good food in all the students of Capital High, with emphasis on sustainabilty and oragnicly produced food.

We are starting a Wild American Box Turtle Captive Breeding Program. We have a very large terrarium and are in the process of acquiring a mate for a female Ornate Box Turtle we already have. We are planning and implementing a breeding program as part of a Scientific Research group made up of several students in the school who meet weekly.

We would like to have the First in Math online Math Program funded. The self-paced, interactive program provides "deep practice" for students in the areas of computation, multi-step problem solving, and test practice.  First in Math is first and foremost about the mathematics. The students receive immediate feedback and are motivated to practice skills until mastery so they can move on to more challenges.

With Curiosity on Mars, we truly can reach for the stars!  The Young Astronaut's Club gives the students of Carlos Gilbert Elementary School the opportunity to explore and learn about space science and the universe.  This program request will fund rockets for the students to design, build and finally launch.

Help us build a the ATC science lab.  Recently awarded the US News & World Report Silver Medal (4th Best High School in New Mexico), we are creating a science lab.  Most experiements take place off campus or in the classroom.  As a competitive Middle and High School, science is a challenging and exciting subject.  In order to immerse further into science, ATC needs the materials and tools to create a more hands on experience in science.

8th grade is the best time for students to visit the Bradbury Museum in Los Alamos, since they are studying physical science as well as US history. In this annual trip, we'll explore the history of Manhattan Project and New Mexico's role in nuclear science. This is also the only place near Santa Fe where students can see ultra-cold liquid nitrogen in action, which helps them understand the effects of temperatures in space.

This is a shining example.  Our students advance on average more than 2 grade levels in math after using our curriculum.  We are seeking help purchasing print cartridges and paper to continue our I Can Do Math curriculum.  I Can Do Math has proven to help hundreds of students plug holes in their basic understanding of math and allow them to complete their graduation requirements for math.
