History, New Mexico History & Government

To enrich and expand students' understanding of Santa Fe, the Santa Fe 400th Committee has allocated grants through Dollars4Schools to public school teachers for them to develop programs on the culture and history of the city.

Basic Needs

Ensuring that every child's basic needs are met is the key to success in our schools. 66% of children in the Santa Fe Public Schools qualify for free and reduced lunch. 24% of children (school age) live in poverty in Santa Fe. Principals, teachers and counselors work to provide the basics including clothing (school uniforms, socks, warm coats) as well as nutritious snacks to students to support a healthy learning environment. When basic needs are met, it puts kids on the right track for learning.

Enrichment & Extracurricular

Enrichment is the successful component in a child's education. Programs both inside and outside the classroom provide rich educational opportunities and help make learning fun. After School Programs in our schools help to support the needs of our Santa Fe families. With programs ranging from the arts to history to technology, and everything in between, these programs help with a child's curiosity, discovery and ultimately help foster a love of learning.

Health & Wellness

A child's physical and mental health, emotional well-being, and positive development are key to academic success. Student Wellness Action Teams (SWAT) work to educate students at our middle and high schools. These projects promote the health and wellness of ALL students to advance their readiness to learn, make good choices and ensure a healthy lifestyle.

Literacy

Today a reader - tomorrow a leader! Literacy is the basic cornerstone of learning. In New Mexico's Public Schools, 4th grade reading proficiency is 21%, and 8th grade reading proficiency is 18%. Many of our students struggle to read and write--the basics that make life-long learners--and we must help them improve their skills. These projects are designed to help foster a love of reading and writing as well as provide access to books and enriching learning opportunities.

Science! Math! Technology! Integral components in a school curriculum. Think about the possibilities! To ensure a brighter future, students must immerse themselves in math, science and technology. Science and Technology curriculums are most productive when implemented using interactive, hands-on, inquiry-based, learning and research approaches – which are then meaningfully integrated with Mathematics and Literacy. These programs provide an open door to their future!

The Arts have a direct impact on a child's education! The Arts promote creativity, learning and motivate children to a standard of excellence with gains in math, reading, critical thinking and intelligence. Students who participate in the arts are 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement and 3 times more likely to be awarded for school attendance.
