Programs at DeVargas Middle School « Back to Schools About DeVargas Middle School As a partnership of learners, parents, community and staff, we will work with integrity to assist each seventh and eighth grade student reach his or her highest potential for success through a developmentally based curriculum. School’s Vision:Creating a school community where everyone pursues an active role in the learning process and fosters a curiosity for knowledge. De Vargas Middle School is the first school in the Santa Fe Public School District to become an Expanded Learning Program site. Through a partnership with Citizen Schools, the school day at DVMS for approximately 140 students does not end until 5:40 p.m. The effort mobilizes a second shift of afternoon educators who provide academic support, leadership development, apprenticeship, high school preparation, college preparation and career education. Groups and activities for students include: Yearbook Club Mariachi Conquistador GUTS (Growing Up Thinking Scientifically) MESA Natural Helpers First Serve Tennis/Tutoring Program (in partnership with First Serve NM) Breakthrough (SF Prep Program) Battle of the Books Program SWAT Athletic Opportunities:Football, Volleyball, Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball, Cheer, Girls’ and Boys’ Track. For SY 2009–10:Our Teacher and School Awards and Accomplishments: Brooke Nutini Turnquist – Teachers Who Inspire Presley Madrid, Security Officer was named Officer of the Year Our Student Athletic Awards:8th Girls’ Basketball – 1st Place in 8th Grade TournamentAll participants in sports received a Participation trophy and a Certification for participating. Our Other Accomplishments: 62 7th Graders were invited to participate in a Legislative Advocacy Training for middle school students, along with other students from around the state. DVMS Students raised over $1,000 for the Haiti Relief Fund SWAT students attended the DWI Day at the Roundhouse during the state legislative session last year where they received training in advocacy work. SWAT won first prize at the district-wide SWAT leadership training in the fall of last year.
